For far too long, the Department of Defense (DOD) has neglected its commitment to the citizens of Madison County of safely disposing of over 520 tons of chemical weapons stored at the Bluegrass Army Depot.  Thanks to Senator McConnell, however, DOD may no longer be able to treat Kentucky communities as the bill-payer for its other priorities.   Specifically, Senator McConnell’s legislation, which was passed by the full Senate today, would require DOD to completely dispose of these horrible weapons by 2017.  Without this amendment, DOD has indicated it would not finish disposal of these weapons before 2023.  For more information, check out this article from the Lexington Herald Leader.
