The Richmond Register today reported on the efforts I have led to accelerate the destruction of the dangerous weapons housed at Blue Grass Army Depot.
U.S. Rep Ben Chandler (D-KY-5) has worked hard in the House to support my efforts and I deeply appreciate his help. This is an issue Ben and I have talked about and we are in total agreement on the need to get rid of these awful weapons as quickly and safely as possible.

The Associated Press today reported on the Senate's defeat of the DREAM legislation which would have granted illegal immigrants a "special path" to immigration. As I have said many times before, legal immigrants are among our finest citizens and contribute an enormous amount to our nation. Granting illegal immigrants a "pass" would be unfair and disrespectful to those who play by the rules and would send the wrong message.
Below I have included an excerpt from the article. But Republican opponents of the bill called it the first step to amnesty, which they contended the Senate rejected back in June. "I do not believe we should reward illegal behavior,'' Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell said. "This would be the wrong direction,'' added Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala. "This would be to signal that once again we're focused on rewarding illegality rather than taking the steps necessary to create a lawful system.'' Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., saw a different problem. "I have grave reservations about seeing a part of comprehensive immigration reform going forward, because it weakens our position to get a comprehensive bill,'' he said. Read the entire article here.

Liberals in the Senate have brought up the DREAM Act, which would grant illegal immigrants who graduate from high school a "special path" to citizenship. This is wrong-headed and ill-timed.
It's wrong-headed because until now the Senate has been steadfast in its position: legal immigrants have made countless positive contributions to our country for generations. And granting illegal immigrants a "pass" on the process so many hardworking and law-abiding Americans have so diligently followed would be more than just a mistake; it would be an insult to legal immigrants. Just as bad is the timing of this bill. We're already four weeks into the fiscal year, and there are at least three other items we need to address before we even start talking about DREAM:
The Congress has a chance to move our country forward on a road of responsible fiscal policy. Passing DREAM now would be a wrong turn for all Americans. |
